Escape from the city and get up close with nature at an eco-inspired ethical retreat with rescued elephants as neighbors. In the scenic province of Petchaburi, visit a sacred cave, a beautiful Khmer-style stupa, and a historic hilltop summer palace.
In the morning, depart from the city for Petchaburi province. Meaning “city of diamonds”, Phetchaburi is certainly home to a few gems, many of which can be seen on the top of Khao Wang Hill. We’ll visit Phra Nakhon Khiri, a complex of religious buildings, chedis, villas and throne rooms that adorn the hill. It was used by several former kings as a summer palace and a place for entertainment.
Within the hill is Tham Khao Luang, an impressive cave accessed by steep stairs and filled with stalactites and rock formations. The seated Buddha inside the main chamber is sometimes illuminated by shafts of sunlight coming through the roof of the cave.
After lunch in a local restaurant we’ll visit Wat Mahathat Worawihan – a stunning five-tiered Khmer-style stupa. The walls and buildings of the temple are beautifully embellished, and traditional musicians and dancers often perform here throughout the day.
Late afternoon we’ll check in to I Love Phants Lodge – a luxurious, eco-inspired, ethical retreat. The rooms are located on the extensive grounds of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand where many rescued animals are rehabilitated and given sanctuary. This is a chance to get up close and personal with rescued elephants in a way that does not exploit them.
Overnight in Petchaburi.
Wake up to the sounds of the animals. After breakfast there’s time to relax or join in with the activities of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (own account).
Transfer back to the hotel in Bangkok or the airport for the onwards flight.
