Experience Overview

Spend two days at Kanchanaburi and the River Kwai, an area of lush riverside scenery framed by rolling mountains and steeped in history. Visit the main sights, take a train ride on the notorious Death Railway and discover the culture of the Mon people.

Sample Itinerary

Am fruehen Morgen brechen Sie auf, in die Provinz Kanchanaburi, etwa 130 km von Bangkok entfernt.

On arrival, our first stop will be at the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre, an interactive museum, information and research facility showcasing the history of the Thailand–Burma Railway. This is the ideal place to learn more about the role the area and the famous River Kwai played during World War II.

A visit to the serene and incredibly well-kept Allied War Cemetery is a moving experience. It is the final resting place of over 6000 allied prisoners of war who died during the construction of the ‘Death Railway’.

Of course, the morning wouldn’t be complete without seeing the world famous ‘Bridge over the River Kwai’ – a great place to take photos and enjoy the riverside scenery. A long–tailed boat will then take us along the River Kwai to the hotel just in time for lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll hop back aboard the boat to visit a nearby ethnic Mon tribal village to see the everyday life of the inhabitants and their temple.

That evening we can relax over dinner and a show of traditional Mon dancing.

Overnight in Kanchanaburi.

After breakfast we’ll travel by river and road to reach the Hellfire Pass Memorial. Hellfire Pass is a railway cutting on the former Burma Railway where many lives were sacrificed. Here we can learn more about the sad history and how the POWs carved through the rocky mountain using just hand tools.

After checking out of the hotel, it’s all aboard the train for a ride along the historic ‘Death Railway’, passing over the original wooden viaduct constructed by Allied POWs.

Sadly, it’s then time to leave Kanchanaburi and start the journey back to Bangkok.
